DIVORCEMENT (Four)
Jezebel met her death according to Elijah’s prophecy (2Kings 9:36-37).
(…continues from part 3)
4) God, through Prophet Elijah, anointed Jehu, a military captain to annihilate the house of Ahab in the Book of 2Kings 9:7 “And thou shalt smite the house of Ahab thy master, that I may avenge the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the LORD, at the hand of Jezebel.” Coming close to the King Joram of Israel, the son of Ahab, who willingly accepted to be led by Jezebel, his mother: “And it came to pass, when Joram saw Jehu, that he said, Is it peace, Jehu? And he answered, What peace, so long as the whoredoms of thy mother Jezebel and her witchcrafts are so many? 24) And Jehu drew a bow with his full strength, and smote Jehoram between his arms, and the arrow went out at his heart, and he sunk down in his chariot” (2Kings 9:22-24).
Disappointingly surprising was the alliance between Joram of idolatrous Israel and the king of Judah. “But when Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled by the way of the garden house. And Jehu followed after him, and said, Smite him also in the chariot. And they did so at the going up to Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled to Megiddo, and died there” (2Kings 9:27). The concluding mission of Jehu’s cleansing Israel of idolatry was the throwing a defiant Jezebel out of the window. “Wherefore they came again, and told him. And he said, This is the word of the LORD, which he spake by his servant Elijah the Tishbite, saying, In the portion of Jezreel shall dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel 37) And the carcase of Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of Jezreel; so that they shall not say, This is Jezebel” (2Kings 9:36-37). It would not have come to this if Ahab had terminated the offensive marriage.
Even the great King Solomon fell because of wrong marriage
Joshua 23:12-13 12) “Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you: 13) Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.” What should a wise person do, keep an unholy wedlock which comes with satanic snares, traps and scourges, an ignition of God’s infuriation, or bring it to an end and be at peace with the Most High?
Deuteronomy 23:3 “An Ammonite or Moabite shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to their tenth generation shall they not enter into the congregation of the LORD for ever:” for how can two walk the conjugal trajectory successfully except they are a couple with the mind of Jesus Christ? The Ammonite and Moabite had no covenant relationship with the God of Israel. And from the leadership of Nehemiah as Israel returned home from long sojourn was the rhetoric “Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying strange wives?” (Nehemiah 13:27). A rhetorical question has, embedded in it, the answer to the problem it seeks to address. Using the great King Solomon as a precept, Nehemiah’s query is, “If Solomon’s sagacity and influence and his relationship with God will not render his penchant for foreign women guiltless, how can you expect us to tolerate this conjugal illegality?” It is an egregious treachery for a Christian to enter into a marriage with someone known as an unrepentant unbeliever of God’s lines and precepts.
Marriage is intended to usher one into the status of authority and maturity. No matter the sincerity that leads one into any marriage, as long as it fails to mirror the Divine pattern, it remains ultra vires simply because you are sincerely wrong. Your act is grossly unwarranted. Was Adam given an option to marry more than one woman? Is Jesus not going to marry just one Woman – the Church? Marrying more than one wife has always been problematic. Abraham did not want Hagar to go even against Divine reasoning. David’s palace became a riotous home. Solomon, the wisest of homo sapiens, got himself plunged into unbelievable idolatrous stupidity. And like the scoffing priests of Isaiah’s old days, some think their intellectualism have placed them on too high a pedestal to go back to the kindergarten littleness of biblical studentship.
We must come to the realization of our inadequacies, pray to the LORD God for forgiveness of disobedience to His word. Ezra 10:2-12 “And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing. 10) And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the trespass of Israel. 11) Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives. 12) Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said, so must we do.” The very minute one agrees to his wrongdoings and asks God for His divine help, everything comes to normalcy.
Jeremiah 3:1 “They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man’s, shall he return unto her again? Shall not that land be greatly polluted? But thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, saith the LORD.” This is all that the LORD God is ever yearning to do: welcome and accept us back as His children and, of course, soteriologically, as the Bride of the Lamb. Lackadaisical approach to marital conditions leads to its possible annulment. A genuine return to God, like the parabolical prodigal son, kills the spirit of divorcement. Amen!
You can be part of the Divine conjugal bliss by being born again. Say this prayer from your heart, believing every word.
Dear heavenly Father, I come to You now in the name of Jesus Christ. I believe in my heart that Jesus is the Son of God. I believe in my heart that Jesus died for my sins and You raised Him from the dead. I confess with my mouth that Jesus is Lord, and I receive Him as my Lord and my Saviour. I give God all the glory, Amen.
